Her husbands included baseball star Joe DiMagio (1954) and playwright Arthur Miller (1956-61). Sadly, her personal life was marred with rumored affairs with John and Robert Kennedy. Early Life of Norma Jeane Baker Norma Jeane Mortenson was born on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles, California, but baptized and raised as Norma Jeane Baker, to Gladys Baker, with the identity of her father uncertain. She spent most of her childhood in foster homes and orphanages until 1937 as her mother was committed to a mental institution. From Norma Jean to Marilyn Monroe Aged 16, she opted to marry 21-year-old Jimmy Dougherty to avoid the orphanage. When he became a sailor, she took an assembly line job in an ammunitions factory. It was this time that photographer David Conover spotted her. Within two years, she was a model with popular magazine covers. After divorcing Jimmy in 1946, she dyed her hair blonde and changed her name to Marilyn Monroe, after her grandmother’s last name. She also headed for Hollywood. Marilyn Monroe’s Legacy She was found dead on the early morning of August 5, 1962, at her Brentwood, California home. Her last film was Miller’s drama The Misfits (1961). She made about 30 films, leaving the unfinished Something’s Gotta Give. As Norma Jean she lived a lonely and tragic life. As Marilyn Monroe, she was epitome of Hollywood glamour. Her glamorous image epitomizes the concept of feminine beauty, and to those who struggle to overcome personal obstacles, her life has been an inspiration.
